What is an Open MRI scan?
Our Open Access MRI is suitable for those patients who are not comfortable in a traditional scanner, as the patient will lie between two large, horizontal magnetised plates, so the sides are open. We particularly recommend this type of MRI scan for patients who are claustrophobic (fear of enclosed spaces) or of a larger build (often classed as bariatric), as they are often more comfortable and feel less anxious throughout the scanning process.

WHAT WE CAN SCAN
We are pleased to be able to offer this service to make MRI accessible . Unfortunately, there are some compromises. Whilst traditional supine scanners have a high strength magnetic field – generally 1.5T, but sometimes up to 3T – open MRI scanners have a lower field strength. Whilst this has little impact on musculoskeletal or neurological imaging, it does mean we aren’t able to perform soft tissue scans.
Check the list below to see what we can scan :
Brain including Circle of Willis
Eyes and Ears (IAMS)
Arms, Elbows, Wrists and Hands
Pelvis and Hips
Knees, Legs and Ankles
