“Back in August, I was enjoying a much-needed family holiday in the Maldives, when I felt some discomfort in my neck and found an unusual lump. Upon returning to the UK, I sought an appointment with my GP, who referred me to the local NHS hospital. I saw a specialist after a few weeks and had some blood taken. After his examination, he said he wanted to rule out anything more serious. “You need an MRI” he said.
“I was devastated. I went home, thoughts whirring around my head. With 2 small children to look after, all I could think about was this impending MRI and what this could mean for my family. We live in the city and we both work hard for daily life; we’re saving for a mortgage and the ‘rainy day’ fund which inevitably covers the cost of fixing the car (again)! Who would look after them if something happened to me? How would my husband cope financially?
“On the school run, I bumped into an old work colleague, who I remembered had been very sick a few years previously. It turns out that she experienced a similar concern and suggested that I look into private healthcare. She told me that it was the best decision she’d ever made – she got a referral from her GP and was seen within a few days. I looked into the private MRI clinic she had recommended, and it cost more than our family holiday! I decided to have a look around and discovered that most MRI companies don’t display their prices and began calling around. I came across MRI Plus, offering an MRI for just £199…surely this was too good to be true?
“I gave them a call and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly voice on the other end of the line, and there were no hidden surprises with the price! He advised that I didn’t need to bother my doctor for a referral, and talked me through the self-referral process, which saved me a good half an hour on hold to my Medical Centre. He even squeezed me in for an appointment that very afternoon!
“When I arrived, I wasn’t sure what I was expecting – I was more concerned about what the scan may find. I was greeted by a lovely young lady who asked me to complete some forms, then I was whisked into a changing room to prepare. Nervously, I met the radiographer who discussed the MRI process a little further and calmly spoke to me through a microphone during the scan. Half an hour later, I was walking out of the imaging centre with my images in-hand.
“My specialist received my results and gave me the all clear. Phew!
“A few weeks later, my MRI appointment letter hit my doorstep. In that moment, I felt so glad I had just paid the £199 to save myself all those weeks of stress and worry – instead of waiting, I’d spent my time focussing on my family and career instead. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
