“It started with a bit of discomfort in my hip, so I put it down to working too many hours, but it quickly progressed into a searing pain in my hip and lower back. The pain was worse every day and, being self-employed, I couldn’t afford to take any time off.
“I went to see the family GP and he explained that it seemed to be a trapped nerve and prescribed some pain medication. I tried them for a week, but they weren’t working so I was keen to see if there were any other treatment options available.
“My doctor referred me to the hospital physio, but the exercises just weren’t working. If anything, they were making the pain worse! I started to wonder if it may be something more sinister.
“I had started to walk lop-sided and I was in excruciating pain, so one day I just decided to go A&E and push for answers. There was a long wait, but I was sent for an X-Ray, which showed that some bone was missing from the ball joint on my left hip. As I had been walking with this condition for so long, I was told that I needed an MRI, but I had to go back to my doctor for a referral.
“I was a bit baffled by how this could have happened and spoke to my parents that evening. We spoke about whether private healthcare might give me answers quicker, and when they mentioned an MRI clinic nearby, I had a look online to see what information I could find. It turns out that MRI Plus is only a short drive from my house, but the £199 MRI deal seemed a bit too good to be true, so I gave them a call to find out more. The receptionist was helpful and booked me in for an appointment on the same day and reassured me that it really was only £199. I couldn’t believe it!
“I turned up and completed the self-referral form and had my MRI scan. Everyone was so friendly, from the receptionist who helped me make my appointment, through to the radiographer. I walked away with my scan images and awaited my results.
“At my GP appointment, the MRI report recommended a DEXA scan as the missing bone mass was so unusual for my age. However, my GP had sent a referral for a consultant at the hospital and the concern was that I wouldn’t get the bone density scan done in time. I remembered seeing DEXA scans on the MRI Plus website, so I wondered if I could book with them again.
“I spoke to the friendly team at MRI Plus and booked my DEXA scan – the scan was quick and easy and my results arrived before my appointment with the consultant. It turns out that I had osteopenia, which accounted for all the pain I was in. I was referred for a hip replacement surgery and given treatment to help reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis.
“My hip operation went well and I now only experience mild discomfort whilst I’m at work. The fact that I was able to get this hip replacement so quickly is testament to having an MRI so promptly. I’m back to my usual self and really couldn’t be happier”
